Black History Month was celebrated several ways throughout the Herricks Public Schools during the month of February. Students engaged in lessons, reading assignments, discussions, art projects and other activities that focused on Black heroes and their historical contributions.

Among the many activities taking place districtwide, Mrs. Kennedy’s second grade class at Center Street School researched Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his contributions to the Civil Rights movement. Students then created signs and artwork celebrating his legacy. Mrs. Brillon’s fourth-grade class researched historical African Americans and their achievements throughout history. After the students’ research was complete, they created a torn paper portrait honoring these men and women for their contributions that have shaped our nation.

Students at Searingtown School celebrated through various art projects. Kindergartners learned about African American artists Alma Thomas and Lois Mailou Jones, and created artwork inspired by each of their signature motifs. First graders created Alma Thomas Heart collages, while second graders explored Kente cloth weaving and giraffe collages. Fifth graders honored Black History Month by creating African Savannah silhouettes.

At Herricks High School, students in the Black Student Union Club created a bulletin board thanking Black staff members. Staff members were asked to share the best part about working at Herricks and their photos were displayed on the board. Students were also encouraged to write simple thank you notes to the staff members, as well.
