Student aid fund helping college students in need at ‘Fun Walk’ in Great Neck this Sunday
Kensington Mayor Susan Lopatkin and Great Neck Plaza Mayor Ted Rosen, center, kicked off last year’s Great Neck Student Aid Fund “Fun Walk” to help area college students in need of financial assistance. The walk will be held this Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. in front of Great Neck Plaza Village Hall.

Residents will take to the streets in Great Neck this Sunday to help raise funds for area students in need of financial assistance in order to go to college.

The Great Neck Student Aid Fund—dedicated to assisting needy area students pay for college expenses—will hold a one-mile “Fun Walk for Education” on Sunday, April 23, beginning at 10 a.m. in front of Great Neck Plaza Village Hall.

“Believe it or not, there are a lot of Great Neck students who would not be able to afford college if they were not given a helping hand. That is just what we seek to do,” said Jill Monoson, an organizer of the walk and co-president of the Great Neck Student Aid Fund. “All of the money raised stays in our community and helps the students in need right in our own community.”

Registration for the Fun Walk, which will be held rain or shine, begins at 9 a.m. on the day of the walk in front of Great Neck Plaza Village Hall, 1 Gussack Plaza. There will be a give-away to the first 50 people who register for the walk and snacks and water will be provided to all participants. The charge for participating is $10 for students and $20 for adults. In addition, individuals or companies donating $250 or more will have a sign displaying their name on the route of the walk.

Registration can also be done in advance at: gnsaf.com/fun-walk-for-education.

The Fun Walk for Education began in 2018. Since then, both participants and monies raised have nearly doubled. “This is an opportunity for our community to come together and help our own students,” Ms. Monoson said. “Each year a number of graduates from local high schools are able to attend the college of their choice with the help of the Student Aid Fund and its generous contributors.”

Founded in 1938, the Great Neck Student Aid Fund provides one-time grants to an increasing number of students seeking financial assistance to defray costs during the critical first year of college. Financial need— not academic achievement—is the basis for the selection of recipients. The Student Aid fund maintains a meticulous, objective and confidential screening process to determine eligibility for student aid.
