Glen Cove marks Holocaust Remembrance Day: city mayor, city councilwoman, three community faith organizations

The city of Glen Cove joins with the Congregation Tifereth Israel and the North Country Reform Temple Ner Tamid in a program rejecting hate and prejudice in the community of Glen Cove, while commemorating Yom HaShoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day.

This event is free; there will be speakers, prayers and refreshments. The public is urged to attend, and reservations are not needed.

Glen Cove City Hall (9 Glen St.) is the setting for an April 17 commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day that recognizes the victims and survivors of the Holocaust, as well as all others who have suffered the effects of intolerance and bigotry. The evening begins at 7 p.m. as Glen Cove Councilwoman Marsha Silverman welcomes attendees and introduces each of the speakers.

She is followed by Rabbi Michael Churgel of North Country Reform Temple Ner Tamid (NCRT) who offers a benediction. Glen Cove Mayor Pamela Panzenbeck then discusses the importance of Glen Cove being a safe community for all of its residents. Letters from Holocaust survivors will be read by Glen Cove resident Rochelle Bordwin. She is followed with remarks by the Rev. Roger C. Williams, the pastor of the First Baptist Church, and Rabbi Irwin Huberman of Congregation Tifereth Israel (CTI). Cantor Gustavo Gitlin of Congregation Tifereth Israel concludes the program with a recitation of Kaddish, the ancient Jewish prayer recited in memory of those who have passed.
