Denton Avenue Elementary School art students in grades K-5 designed cards and artwork filled with inspirational messages of support and hope to send Ukrainian refugee children being sheltered in Poland. The young Herricks artists were eager to learn the colors that represent the Ukraine and realized that the simple gesture of peace is the same worldwide.
Denton Avenue art teacher Maria Monda partnered with other Long Island school districts through a network of art teachers to coordinate the efforts on behalf of the Herricks school.
“I loved how willing and enthusiastic my students were to support this effort,” Monda said.
She used this opportunity to teach students that art is a universal language and showing support without words can be very powerful, especially when the message is being sent between children.
The cards were part of a larger donation effort that was sent through Saint Josaphat’s Monastery in Glen Cove.
