December events at the Floral Park Library

Construction on the Library’s new handicapped-accessible front entrance began in late November and is expected to be completed in early Spring 2023. During construction, access to the Library will be via the rear door only; there is no access from the main entrance.

Thank you to our generous patrons for making our Thanksgiving Food for Fines initiative so successful. We filled up our oversized grocery bag with donated items quite a few times over the month.

And thanks, too, Laura Trentacoste and our Children’s Librarian Kathy Guidal for leading a tour of Floral Park’s award-winning Centennial Gardens. More than 40 families turned out for this event.

To celebrate the holiday season, the Our Lady of Victory Bell Choir and Dulce Noel carolers will perform live at the Library on December 4th. This is a return engagement for them, as last year’s performance marked their first live event since the beginning of the pandemic!
This month, the Floral Park Explorers’ celebrates the holiday with a backstage tour of Radio City Music Hall.

For adults, Wednesday morning hybrid weekly Chair Yoga with Micheline continues, as does Saturday morning English Language Learner classes. Empire Safety Council’s Defensive Driving program happens on Thursday, December 8th. Monday afternoon’s movie Matinee, “Downton Abbey – A New Era” plays on our Smartboard on December 12th. Chef Barbara Sheridan makes winter soups and stews, and Louann Sherbach brings her folded book art talents to a Santa craft.

Teens can choose from Winter Cupcake Wars, Graffiti Art (grades 6 – 12), or a Conveyor Belt Challenge this month.

For the younger set, there’s Play Hooray Kids, and A Time for Kids offers Baby Start, Family Pre-School Hour, and an Evening Family Pre-School Hour, and a Young Engineers program. Chefs of d’Future Family Holiday event is so popular, four sessions are on the schedule. Crafty programs include Mommy & Me Pre-K Cookie Ornaments, Holiday Ornaments with Through the Looking Glass, Clay Stamp Ornaments and a Drop-In Craft.

The Made with Love Knitting and Crocheting volunteer group meetings meet Mondays at 6:30 pm and Wednesdays at 11:30 am. New volunteers are welcome in this amazing group of talented knitters. The Monday Morning Friends Book Club and the Evening Edition Book Club both have meetings scheduled this month. The Evening Edition always welcomes new members.

The Library Board meets at 7:30 pm Wednesday, December 14th. All are welcome to attend.

We encourage you to visit our Book Nook. Call the Library (516 326-6330) to check days and times, as hours may vary. Proceeds from the sale of books, DVDs, etc. go to support the Friends of the Floral Park Library, a 501c3 organization.

The Library is closed Saturday, December 24th, Sunday, December 25th and Monday, December 26th for the Christmas holiday.
