Assemblywoman Gina Sillitti (D-Port Washington) announced a bill she co-sponsored raising the maximum income eligibility limit for seniors and people with disabilities to receive increased property tax savings was signed into law by Governor Hochul.

“As we face rising costs, it’s more important than ever that we look out for our more vulnerable neighbors and community members,” said Sillitti. “Many seniors and disabled residents who live on limited-or-fixed incomes don’t deserve to be priced out of the homes they’ve worked for. I fought for legislation that will help these valued members of our community stay in their homes.”

New York State has a growing number of low-income seniors on fixed incomes and disabled residents on limited incomes who have found it difficult to face increasing property taxes.

Currently, the Senior Citizen Real Property Tax Exemption Program and the Person’s with Disabilities Real Property Tax Exemption limit stand at $37,399. This bill now allows local governments to raise the maximum income eligibility limit to $50,000.

The maximum income eligibility for these exemptions has not been raised since 2009.
