Alzheimer’s Association holds Legal and Financial Planning Conference in Melville

The Long Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association hosted the 2024 Legal and Financial Planning Conference hosted the Alzheimer’s Association Long Island Chapter on Saturday, April 6 at the Hilton Long Island in Melville.

Speakers included Michael Ettinger, Ronald Fatoullah, Elizabeth Lambert Gullo, Donna Stefans and Marie Taylor. 

“Changing the public’s attitudes and behavior towards the impact of Alzheimer’s disease on family members is important,” said Marie Taylor, financial advisor at Edward Jones. “It was an opportunity for me to share awareness on the risk factors, warning signs, the unexpected cost involved and the added burden bestows on our caregivers.”

The conference was intended for people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia, their care partners, and family members.

Topics covered included Advanced Directives and Guardianships, Asset Protection and Trusts, Hidden Costs of Caregiving, Institutional Medicaid and Nursing Home Care and Protecting the Family Home. Free respite care was provided by Home Companion Services with activities by the Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center.

“Our goal for the conference was to empower families facing this disease with the tools and techniques they need to utilize to navigate the care options available while at the same time learning asset protection options available for their loved ones,” said Donna Stefans, founder and leader attorney at Stefans Law Group. “Facing Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias is hard enough, we can make the path easier with on-point education and helpful resources to weather the storm.”

“With the number of New Yorkers affected by Alzheimer’s disease continuing to increase, it is vital to reach as many Long Islanders as we can to offer support and services,” said Taryn Kutujian, Senior Community Education Manager of the Alzheimer’s Association Long Island Chapter. “Thank you to everyone who attended our conference as well as our fantastic speakers.”
