Consistent with her ongoing commitment to supporting the Friends of Cedarmere and their restoration, maintenance and programmatic efforts at the historic site, Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D–Glen Cove) has secured $95,000 in funding from the County’s Hotel/Motel Grant Program for the not-for-profit organization. The full Legislature voted unanimously on Monday, Oct. 24 to approve the grant.
Funds will support ongoing operations and programming, maintain and improve the gardens and grounds, complete ongoing renovations to the main house and outbuildings, and remove growths of invasive species on the grounds and in the pond.
“Whether it’s simply to walk the grounds or to become immersed in the rich history presented in the main house, Cedarmere is a jewel along Hempstead Harbor that everyone enjoys visiting for their own special reason,” Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton said. “I am glad to be able to secure funding additional funding that will help the Friends of Cedarmare continue their efforts to restore and maintain this historic treasure for generations to come.”
William Cullen Bryant originally, the editor of the New York Evening Post for 50 years, owned this nearly 150-year-old estate; the adjoining Bryant Avenue was named after him.
