Vintage cars from the New York Alfa Romeo Car Club will roll through New Hyde Park to help Umberto’s raise money for food-insecure Long Islanders.

Umberto’s of New Hyde Park will host its second annual car show — originally slated for Aug. 18, but was moved to Sept. 1 due to poor weather forecasted — with the New York Alfa Romeo Owners Club.

The event will support the Island Harvest Food Bank, the region’s leading hunger relief organization. Its mission is to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.

Ahead of the event, Umberto’s hosted a food drive and placed collection bins at its locations in New Hyde Park, Manhasset, Massapequa Park, Bellmore, and Lake Grove.

“Our car show allows us to raise awareness about food insecurity on Long Island and assisting Island Harvest in helping our neighbors in need,” Umberto Corteo, owner and founder of Umberto’s of New Hyde Park, said in a press release. “We understand that no one should live without having access to food and we embrace Island Harvest’s mission. We welcome our friends and neighbors to join us in celebrating classic Italian automobiles and supporting a worthy cause.”

The show will feature vintage and modern Alfa Romeo vehicles from the New York Alfa Romeo Owners Club. The club consists of owners of Italian sports cars who enjoy driving and meeting fellow owners or enthusiasts. Ida Corteo, daughter of Umberto, said that the Alfa Romeo was the first sports car her father bought.

The event will also feature prizes, giveaways, music, Italian fare, and pizza.

“It’s our second year teaming up with Island Harvest. We’ve always wanted to and it seemed like a no-brainer,” Ida said. “We supply food for a living. We feed people. This is what we do best.”

Raising awareness about food insecurity is “near and dear” to Ida’s heart. She said that Umberto faced food insecurity as a child, growing up in war-torn Italy in the 1940s.

“I would sometimes complain about pasta every day and he would say, ‘I wish we had pasta every day. Sometimes we would go to bed hungry.’,” Ida said. “That always resonated with me.”

Ida said that after contacting Island Harvest, she was amazed to learn that there was a lot of food insecurity on Long Island.

“I hope we can create awareness,” Ida said. “It shouldn’t be happening in this country.”

Ida said she most looks forward to seeing her 81-year-old dad reconnect with his old friends.

“It puts such a smile on his face,” Ida said. “What could be better than that?”

This car show will continue to be a yearly event at Umberto’s of New Hyde Park. Ida said she is proud to host this event and will continue to do so until food insecurity is eradicated on Long Island.
