A woman in Mineola nearly lost $30,000 because in a phone scam.
Police arrested a Brooklyn man for attempted grand larceny on Monday at 12:25 p.m. in Mineola.
The unidentified 57-year-old woman was contacted by a man claiming to be a Microsoft employee, detectives said. The faux Microsoft employee told the victim she had a $30,000 gambling charge on her account.
Soon after, a second man claiming to work for Chase Fraud Prevention called the victim. The man persuaded her to withdraw $30,000 in cash from her Chase account to satisfy the debt. The man told the victim an agent would arrive at her residence to take the money.
The victim became suspicious after she withdrew the money from her account.
Police arrested Yongkang Weng, 31, after an investigation. Weng is charged with attempted grand larceny 3rd degree, attempted conspiracy 5th degree and attempted scheme to defraud 2nd degree.
His arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday, April 2 at First District Court in Hempstead.
