The Sewanhaka Central High School  District Board of Education Tuesday night approved a resolution to pay $3,000 to Josten’s for consultation on rebranding the schools’ mascot.

Josten’s, a firm usually known for making school rings and yearbooks, will assist Sewanhaka by collecting, interpreting and facilitating data, Superintendent Thomas Dolan said.

Sewanhaka has the entire year to decide on a new mascot and Dolan said he believes with Josten’s help it can be done earlier. The first meeting for the focus group on finding a new mascot will also take place later this month, Dolan said.

Sewanhaka High School needs to change its “Indian” nickname and mascot after New York’s Board of Regents unanimously voted to ban the use of Native American mascots, team names, logos and depictions on April 18.

In unrelated district news, Kevin Sullivan was appointed as the new assistant principal at Floral Park Memorial High School, replacing Jennifer Alaimo who was named the new principal at Elmont Memorial High School earlier this year.

The district will also be offering a small amount of halal menu items on most days of the week, Dolan said, with plans to expand options in the future.

“We will carefully monitor this early in the year and determine how to move forward,” Dolan said.

Starting on Sept. 19, the district will begin live-streaming board meetings after purchasing broadcasting equipment Tuesday night for $5,450. Many residents expressed concern during public comments in previous meetings over a lack of live-stream options.

Anyone who tunes in will not have access to ask questions during public comment of the meeting.

“This will allow residents to watch from home without having to be present,” Dolan said. “It will expand our opportunities to stay informed.”
