
PROCLAMATION
ARBOR DAY 2023
WHEREAS, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska; and Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife; and trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other wood products; and
WHEREAS, trees in our Village increase property value, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, beautify our community and bring a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and
WHEREAS, the Village of Floral Park in 1943 established a local village ordinance, Chapter 92 – Trees, in its Village code, to protect and care for its shade tree inventory and canopy; and
WHEREAS, the Village established a Tree Board, Shade Tree Department and Parks Department to maintain a Village Shade Tree Plan for the care, preservation, pruning and planting of trees and shrubs in parks, along streets and other public areas; and
WHEREAS, the Village of Floral Park will celebrate Arbor Day on April 28, 2023 by planting fifteen (15) new cherry trees adorning the businesses on Jericho Turnpike between Plainfield and Sycamore Avenues.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kevin M. Fitzgerald, Mayor of the Village of Floral Park, do hereby proclaim April 28, 2023 as Arbor Day in the Village of Floral Park, and I ask all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support efforts to protect our trees, gardens and parks; and
FURTHER, I urge all citizens to plant and care for trees to gladden the heart and promote the well-being for this and future generations.
