New Hyde Park man falls victim to $4,700 elder scam

A 60-year-old New Hyde Park man fell victim to an elder scam March 23 after receiving a call from a phone number titled “Nassau County Police,” authorities said.

The man was told to withdraw $15,000 from the bank to purchase gift cards after he was told there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest in another state.

After multiple follow-up calls from different phone numbers the victim became suspicious of the scam, but already had lost $4,700 after giving out the serial numbers for various gift cards, police said.

The Nassau County Police Department said to remind friends and family of potential scams or fraud and that the department will never contact members of the public to request money.

Anyone with information on the crime to contact 1-800-244-TIPS.
