On Dec. 13, Floral Park-Bellerose’s John Lewis Childs School kindergarteners in Candice Nagle’s class learned about chipmunks and participated in a science experiment.
After learning about how chipmunks store food in their cheek pouches, the students were tasked with seeing how many “nuts” (wooden beads) they could hold in their “paws” (hands) or “cheek pouches” (Ziploc bags). Prior to the test, the students predicted which would be the best way to carry the most nuts. Then, split into groups, the students were timed to collect the nuts with their hands and then with the Ziploc bags.
At the conclusion of the experiment, the class filled out a form with their conclusions and final numbers. They realized that they collected more nuts by using their pouches rather than paws.
