Roslyn High School pre-med students are benefitting from an immersive curriculum this academic year.
Their pre-med course kicked off with a lecture/Q&A with Roslyn graduate Gabrielle Rood, now a third-year medical student, who shared her experiences thus far in medical school.
In the weeks following, students had the opportunity to interact and learn from two local orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Michael Schwartz and Dr. Ari Goldman, who visited their classrooms to guest lecture on the human skeletal and muscle systems.
“It was such a pleasure having Dr. Schwartz come in and share his expertise with our pre-med class,” said science teacher Joe Dispigno. “His knowledge and passion for orthopedic surgery was truly appreciated by our students.”
Dr. Goldman, a Roslyn community member and parent, along with colleagues Lewis Collins, Ryan Morrison and Nicolette Rubin, shared stories and showed visuals of the orthopedic trauma cases they typically work on, both in and out of the operating room.
“Students received a hands-on opportunity to ‘fix’ bones with the drills and hardware that practicing doctors use to repair skeletal damage of all kinds,” said science teacher Lisa Spyridon. “We are so grateful for such a most fascinating and hands-on experience facilitated by these brilliant and generous medical professionals.”
“Bringing community members and medical professionals into our classrooms provides students with real-world knowledge and gives them a deeper insight into possible career opportunities in the medical profession,” said science chairperson Gary Ramonetti.
