Floral Park Trustee Jennifer Stewart said Wednesday night that membership for the pool is up in almost every category from the same time last year.

“We had a phenomenal opening weekend at our pool,” Stewart said during her board report. “The pool was crowded, the snack shop was crowded, the lifeguards are well trained, it was really a wonderful weekend.”

Stewart thanked Recreation Superintendent Kurt Meyfohrt, pool director Thomas Dillon and administrator Gena King who handled an “avalanche” of membership requests over the weekend to get ready for the June 3 opening, nine days earlier than usual.

“Our membership rates are up in every category for year-over-year from this time last year,” Stewart said. “Our village family memberships are up over 170 families from last summer to this summer. We’re really excited to have a fun-filled summer at the Floral Park pool.”

Resident rates for the year at the pool are $525 for families, $425 for couples, $200 for senior couples, $300 for individuals and $110 for senior citizens. Regular hours are from 10 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. More information can be found on the village’s website and the 2022 pool book

In other village news, Lawrence Jindra, son of World War II veteran Leonard Jindra, spoke more about his father’s story during the public comment portion of the board of trustees meeting.

Leonard Jindra was the Floral Park Memorial Day parade’s grand marshal and shared his experience joining the service and storming Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. Jindra was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 115th Infantry Regiment in the 29th Infantry Division.

Lawrence spoke in more detail about Jindra’s story that he wasn’t able to get into during his speech on Memorial Day.

“He was, if you asked him, not a hero he says,” Jindra said. “He says the real heroes are the ones who didn’t come back. He said he was just doing his job. He is part of the generation where young boys were called upon to do the extraordinary deeds of great men.”

The next Floral Park Board of Trustees meeting is Tuesday, June 21.
