During World Language Week, Roslyn Middle School students raised an astonishing $4,000 for the Pulsera Project—a nonprofit organization that supports communities in Nicaragua and Guatemala through the sale of hand-woven bracelets made by local artisans in Central America. All proceeds go towards programs that empower people through secondary education, university scholarships, housing programs, healthcare, and workers’ rights advocacy. “This was Roslyn Middle School’s fourth pulsera sale,” said language teacher Tami Cutler. “We broke our previous record by selling 800 pulseras!” As the class that raised the most money, Ms. Cutler’s 6th grade Spanish students were given the honor of speaking with Jorge Morales, the Social Impact Director and Artisan Coordinator at the Pulsera Project. Mr. Morales answered questions, shared information about the artisans, and described what a typical day is like for students in Nicaragua. “Ms. Cutler’s 6th grade students demonstrated poise and confidence as they introduced themselves in Spanish. They asked excellent questions about Nicaragua, the Pulsera Project, and the local artisans,” said World Language Chair Danielle Pappas.
