Readers Write: Berkowitz provides informed leadership

Board of Education leadership is an essential ingredient for any successful school district. Barbara Berkowitz has supplied that informed leadership for the Great Neck Public Schools for the last 29 years, years during which Great Neck has continued to set the standard against which other schools in the county, state and nation measure themselves.

Her leadership as board president has seen the district respond to unique challenges and she has consistently done so responsibly, frugally, and collaboratively, while always maintaining a connection with the community she loves and is proud to represent.

I was privileged to witness this leadership personally during my time with the district and have come to learn that such progressive thinking and actions are not the norm in most communities.

Dr. Thomas P. Dolan
Former Superintendent

  1. I am in complete agreement with Dr Dolan. Ms Berkowitz has done nothing but love, support and represent the GNPS for many many years. It’s a great idea to have one representative with institutional memory on the Great Neck Board of Education. The district flourished with her at the helm. Why replace this wonderful long term trustee with a critical person who approaches the position in a negative manner? Keep Barbara Berkowitz on the Great Neck Board of Education.

  2. Looking at things in perspective, Dolan was only in the district for 6 years – and that was 6 years ago. Circumstances have changed; it is time for new ideas and updated thinking in response to the challenges of today.

  3. Dolan was here for 6 years, and that was 6 years ago. Circumstances have changed. It’s time for a change. Looking forward to having someone represent the school district who has children in the district now and can account better for the spending.
