Sewanhaka Central High School District’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Grossane is continuing the tradition of hosting a Superintendent’s Advisory Council, previously set by his predecessor Dr. Ralph Ferrie. The Advisory Council is comprised of students, nominated by their respective principals from Elmont Memorial High School, Floral Park Memorial High School, H. Frank Carey High School, New Hyde Park Memorial High School and Sewanhaka High School, who meet with the superintendent throughout the year and offer feedback and advice that may drive future decision-making districtwide.

In addition to meeting individually with the councils at each of the schools, Dr. Grossane brought approximately 100 districtwide council members to meet together for the first time on Dec. 11. Also in attendance were the schools’ principals and other district personnel.

Students in grades 7-12 from each of the five high schools broke up into groups to discuss the topics of health and wellness, school courses and district pride. The students made many suggestions, all of which will be taken under advisement by the district cabinet and board of education.

Dr. Grossane said he felt it was important to continue the Superintendent’s Advisory Council because he found the district’s students had similar concerns, and he was excited to bring them all together to meet in one place to discuss their ideas. He will continue to meet with each school’s council members individually throughout the school year, adding, “I hope to get them all back together one more time this spring.”
