Bow Tie Cinemas Port Washington has closed.
The cinema, located at 116 Main St., has removed all lettering from the marquee and movie posters from the outside.
According to Great Neck resident Diane Coffield, the Connecticut-based Bow Tie Cinemas made a “corporate decision” to close the theater due to poor attendance and low revenues. It is unclear what will happen to the building.
The location has housed a cinema since 1927, when it opened as the Beacon Theater, according to Cinema Treasures.
It was operated by a number of different organizations over the years. Bow Tie bought the cinema in 2013.
Bow Tie operates several other cinemas in the area, including theaters in Great Neck, Manhasset, Herricks, and Roslyn.
Coffield said she was told Bow Tie has no immediate plans to close the theaters in Great Neck, Manhasset, Herricks and Roslyn.
In addition to New York, the chain operates theaters in Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, Colorado, and Virginia.
Maybe Landmark Theatre should expand to that space and make it a larger theater again…
Good idea!
What a loss! So many local families have enjoyed that wonderful cinema for generations. It is truly a Port Washington landmark. We will miss it.
Anyone with a few million dollars want to help me start a new art house theatre, showing everything from local student films to The Wizard of Oz to Pulp Fiction?
You mean no more “Sound & Talking Pictures!” (written on the brick right side of what was the called “The Beacon Theater”)
