With no royal family and no common cultural background, Americans have precious few symbols in common. Our beautiful flag is one of them. It should embrace all of us regardless of our background.
We need national symbols, we need ways of coming together as a nation and an anthem that we sing at ball games and patriotic events, is something every American should know and every American should respect, because it is part of defining who we are as a nation.
